The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is in full swing, and they couldn’t have picked a more charismatic performer to kick it all off than East Texas native Kacey Musgraves. This country artist, fresh off her Oscars appearance and her recent win of four Grammys, opened RodeoHouston and performed a beautiful tribute to the late “Queen of Tejano” Selena Quintanilla. Kacey Musgraves sang a rendition of Selena’s beloved song “Como la Flor.”

To say the crowd went wild is an understatement! A fitting tribute considering February 26, 1995, is the 24th anniversary of Selena’s last Rodeo performance. A month later, Quintanilla was killed by her fan club president in a heartbreaking day thousands of fans around the world will never forget. Kasey Musgraves shared with Monday night’s huge crowd that, “I have always wanted to play RodeoHouston ever since I was a little girl,” according to chron.com. “We have a lot to celebrate.” The KHOU 11 YouTube video below highlights Musgraves singing the beloved ballad during her performance that night.

The crowd joined in singing along with Musgraves in what must have taken them back, just for a minute, to that magical moment in time when Selena stole the hearts of thousands with her performance. This Texas Hill Country writer was there and remembers it like it was just yesterday with Selena’s larger than life presence.

Selena’s sister Suzette Quintanilla took to her Instagram page and shared a video of the performance with a touching reply stating, “Awww this makes me wanna shed a tear! Takes me back 🙏🏼💜 A Big Big Thank you @spaceykacey for the love at the Houston Rodeo tonite with that SELENA Y LOS DINOS Jam! 💜🔥🔥🔥🔥.”

Not only was Selena’s sister impressed, but plenty of fans took to Twitter expressing their love and admiration for Musgraves’ tribute to such an iconic figure whose music lives on decades after her death and still inspires artists across the globe. Selena truly is a Texas gem, and it’s no wonder Kasey Musgraves would pay homage to such a RodeoHouston legend.
