In such extreme heat as what the majority of Texas is recently facing, any means of being able to cool off, no matter how small, is a necessity. Some of us tend to take for granted the little things we can do, such as purchase a cool treat, a water bottle, or a haircut for that matter. Though they may seem like small things to many of us, to some, these are luxuries that aren’t often affordable. This was the realization that a Lubbock, Texas, barber came to when he was trying to think of ways to help in his community.

John Romo has been a barber for 19 years. He makes a living out of cutting hair for looks, generally, and not necessarily to beat the heat. However, in this instance, it was the first time in his nearly two-decade career that he did so for free. “Just the fact that they’re out here dealing with this weather the heat, the cold, the rain, and the snow, it’s like the world has forgotten a lot of them, so try to come out here today to make them feel better,” Romo explained to KCBD. With that, he put his scissors and clippers to work offering free haircuts for the homeless.

Not only does this effort assist homeless people in the heat, but it also helps lend them a modicum of confidence. If you think back to how you were made to look and subsequently feel from a new haircut, you’ll understand exactly what he means. “It makes you feel better. If you’re feeling down, get a haircut,” Romo said. With respect to how many of his new customers felt, he noted, “The smile spoke for itself because they are a little bit timid, but the smile said it all.”
