Things to Do

Let the Good Times Roll at Mardi Gras, Goldthwaite-Style

The first of its kind to happen in Goldthwaite, the March 1, 2019 fundraiser for the Texas Botanical Gardens will have a Mardi Gras theme! You’ll want to get your krewe together and celebrate. The Gardens represent a part of the Texas Hill Country along the Colorado River, showcasing the historical native plant communities, the lifestyles of the first people to inhabit this land, and the conservation of natural resources in Texas. To miss out on an opportunity to support their growth and progress before Ash Wednesday rolls around would be a shame.

Excited to offer a bit of the Mardi Gras experience to Goldthwaite, the Gardens will host its Mardi Gras event in their pavilion. It will feature live music and a zydeco DJ, a table decorating contest, gumbo and pulled pork sandwiches, a King Cake walk, and a silent auction. Those are just a few of the great ways guests can have fun and support this local treasure. The Gardens boast a sustainable design, making use of local materials in their construction. They also conserve water, work to preserve natural resources, and endorse the appropriate use of native plant species and land management techniques. In that respect, their fundraising efforts are designed to welcome the community to not only enjoy this event but to take pride in their ownership of such a wonderful asset.

In the traditional Mardi Gras colors of purple, green, and gold, local krewes (pronounced “crew”), or groups made up of teams, businesses, and individual entrants are invited to compete for prizes in the table decorating contest. At $160 for eight, $200 for 10, or $15 for individual entries, the stakes will be high and the competition fierce. To the victor go the spoils, as a $100 prize is awarded to those winning participants! To the Texas Botanical Gardens go the “fun” in fundraising. All proceeds from the contest and complementing festivities will benefit improvements to its pavilion, in which many a local gathering will be held.
