The 49-year-old movie star returned to his hometown of Longview, Texas, on Friday, May 17, 2019, for a very special occasion. McConaughey arrived to pick up his high school diploma over 30 years after graduating (maybe that really does prove “Time is a flat circle…”). He also gave a rousing commencement speech to this year’s graduating students of Longview High School.

At Longview High, graduating students typically are given a diploma holder during the graduating ceremony, then pick up their actual diplomas at a later time. Back in 1988, Matthew McConaughey never bothered to pick up his diploma. Now the Academy Award-winner says he finally has “proof.” Kamden Perry and Jephaniah Lister were the football players with Longview High who were tasked with giving McConaughey an autographed football and McConaughey’s state championship ring.

Alright, alright, alright.

“31-years ago, I was you, a graduating Longview Lobo,” McConaughey told students in his speech. “The most important reason for my success, and I believe what will be the most important thing for your success, the one thing that we all have that should never be for sale… that thing is our heart.” McConaughey went on to ask the crowd, “What’s your 20?” This is police terminology which means “What’s your location?”

McConaughey encouraged students to follow their hearts, own their hearts, and make their hearts their “20 at all times.” He referenced the recent tornado that swept through the area, noting that it caused damage and broke a few hearts, but “You will rebuild. Why? Because you’ve got your heart.”

Someone once told me, ‘Time is a flat circle…’

The actor also took time to stop by the local Jucys Burgers. This isn’t the first time in recent memory that McConaughey has been spotted grabbing some food from a Texas burger joint. When he pulled up to the drive-thru at a San Angelo Whataburger, he was kind enough to give the surprised and delighted staff his usual “Alright, alright, alright.” Speaking of that Whataburger experience, do you think McConaughey’s order was a bit odd, or is that the way you like your burgers as well?
