Mattress Mack Extends Charitable Reach to California Following Wildfires

By  |

Most Texans heard about Mattress Mack’s (Jim McIngvale) efforts to help Harvey victims by opening up his furniture store as a shelter. He also held a huge Thanksgiving celebration with 5,000 pounds of turkey for community members. Now, Mattress Mack is extending his charitable contributions out to California in an area that’s near to his heart.

Chron.com writes that McIngvale used to own 30 racing horses that lived at San Luis Rey Downs in Southern California. This area has now been evacuated after it was devastated by wildfire. The more than 100 trainers and caregivers and their families who lived and worked at the track have been displaced, so Click2Houston.com writes that McIngvale has sent about 120 mattresses over two days to those who had to suddenly leave.

Sadly, over two dozen horses perished in the fires since there were not enough trailers to move them to safety. They were released from their stalls but soon returned in a tragic decision that ended up killing them. The news reports that hundreds of others horses were able to be relocated.

“God bless those animals that suffered that horrific fate and all the people of California that suffered that horrific fate. We know what it’s like,” McIngvale told Click2Houston.
