1. Polish your boots: wipe the boots off with a damp cloth to get rid of excess dust and dirt, then gather an eighth cup vinegar, an eighth cup of olive oil or grapeseed oil, and one lemon. Mix the vinegar and oil in a 1:1 ratio. Then, for every 1/8 cup of liquids, add about 10 drops of the lemon; whisk together. With a dry towel or cloth, apply the mixture in large circular motions. Finally, wipe off any excess and those shiny stompers air dry for about twenty minutes.

2. Pray for Willie Nelson. This Texas icon will be 87 years old in April, and we need him more than ever.

3. Learn about new perspectives on Texas history. Texas history has been a staple of seventh-grade education since The State Board of Education said so in 1946; until then, it became a requirement in 1911 for sixth graders. Since then, new outlooks and stories have emerged which tell a more complete story of the way our state was, is, and will be. Research these updated stories and share with friends and family via social media. Then go a step beyond and memorize the Texas pledge.

4. Practice or learn dances of Texas. The internet is full of instructional videos on how to do the cumbia, schottische, and Cotton-eyed Joe. You don’t need a partner, but everyone in the house is welcome to join in for exercise and fun. By the time quarantine is over, you’ll really know how to cut a rug.

5. Create a new BBQ recipe. Playing in the kitchen and over a pit are joys to be experienced from home. Novices can start by whipping up different sauces with items already stocked, while the more seasoned can consider ways to tweek their smoking styles. Plenty of time to let the ingredients meld! Need a break from creating? Play hot sauce roulette. It is hard to focus on containment and boredom when testing mystery condiments in your icebox. Water and milk are imperative here, and don’t try anything that is past its expiration date! Try some quarantine cooking lessons.
