By  |

Jordyn Hawkins, a 15-year-old Texas high school student, was left paralyzed following a tackle during a September 12, 2019, junior varsity football game. His family and community will be gathering for a prayer rally as a result on September 27, 2019.

Hawkins plays in the running back position for the Austin High School Bulldogs. During the game in question, he made a tackle on the opposing team’s quarterback, but then he didn’t get up. In the process, he had suffered a spinal cord injury. His mother, Deandrea Wade, told abc13.com, “Just in the blink of an eye, literally, in front of my eyes, our lives have changed.” Jordyn remains paralyzed from his shoulders-down. However, he has stated that he has a bit of feeling in his extremities. He is currently in recovery at a rehabilitation center called TIRR Memorial Hermann, in the Texas Medical Center, after approximately one week in I.C.U. at Memorial Hermann.

A video tweet was shared by Jessica Willey (@lmJessicaWilley) on Thursday, September 26, 2019 saying: “WE NEED PRAYERS”: Jordyn Hawkins, 15, suffered a spinal cord injury during a football game at Fort Bend’s Austin HS 2 weeks ago. He sent us this video tonight. There is a prayer rally tomorrow night on the same field where he was hurt.” The prayer rally is being held today (Friday, September 27, 2019) from 6 – 8 p.m. on the field at Austin High School, located at 3434 Pheasant Creek Drive, in Sugar Land. It’s the same field where Hawkins was injured, and due to his diagnosis, those in attendance are being asked to wear green in honor of the month of September being Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month.

From his hospital bed, the video shared on Twitter shows Hawkins saying, “Hi, everyone. I’m Jordyn. I want to thank everyone for their well wishes and support. Please continue to pray for my full recovery as I prepare to walk out of here.” His mother has told the media that doctors said there is a 10 percent chance he will walk again. She further added, however, that she and her son won’t accept those chances. “He’s a fighter and he loves a challenge so this is just another challenge for us and I know he’s going to pull through,” she told abc13.com. “My biggest thing is for people to pray with us,” Wade said. Hawkins’ parents have established a GoFundMe page to raise money for the care of their son.
