San Antonio Has Its Very Own Ponte des Artes or Love Lock Bridge

In mid-2015, all of the padlocks or “love locks” that were locked into place on the Pont des Arts bridge in Paris were removed as the structure breathed a sigh of relief from all of the weight placed on it by thousands of lovers since 2008 when the trend began. As Newsweek reports, it was a practical and aesthetic decision as officials decided on installing public art pieces instead of the small, clunky symbols of tourists’ relationships.

The idea of securing a “love lock” appeals to many couples who want to lock their relationship together and symbolically and literally throw away the key on top of a bridge. MySA.com writes that there’s one such location in San Antonio. Appropriately, it’s right by the Bexar County Courthouse Wedding Chapel and the San Antonio River.

“It’s unclear when the local version began or who the first couple was, but searching either the hashtag #SALoveLockBridge or the chapel location on Instagram reveals a few sweet shares,” MySA.com writes.

From the photos below, one can see the sentimental value of every lock, many inscribed with the couples’ names and dates of their anniversary. Take note of the last photo especially if you’re interested in visiting the bridge yourself for a map of the location of the unofficial San Antonio Love Lock Bridge.

Happy 7 year Anniversary to us! #SALoveLockBridge #7years
