How many times do you remember or analyze your dreams? Do you ever recall, in all of the time that you’ve slept, having dreamt about your smartphone? Despite the fact that smartphones seem to play such an integral role in the lives of so many, very few people ever recall having had a dream about their smartphone.

Although it may be the very thing that wakes you up from slumber (because many use the alarm on their phones to get them up in the morning), we so rarely see smartphones in our sleep. Alice Robb, author of the book “Why We Dream: The Transformative Power of Our Nightly Journey,” was recently contacted by a writer for The CUT website to learn more about this unique observation. “People tend not to dream quite as much about reading and writing, which are more recent developments in human history, and more about survival related things, like fighting, even if that has nothing to do with who you are in real life,” she told The CUT.

According to the writer, the type of dreams we have help us to process our anxieties and fears. They also contribute to our ability to prepare for stressful events. Subsequently, people are less prone to dream about their smartphone than they are to see items that have been in existence for a long period of time. Since smartphones are a fairly recent development, many of us won’t recall having seen them in our dreams. Most of us will experience items of significance that are local to us, i.e. our beloved symbols of Texas, our families, our friends, and anything in our lives that have meaning or importance.

In the meantime, researchers have discovered a small subset of individuals who actually have dreamt about their mobile phones. Their study indicated that 2.6 percent of men and 3.5 percent of women actually have seen their phone in their dreams, for the most part as a communication device on which a loved one who has passed on is reaching out to them. Have you had a dream about your smartphone? Do you recall why or how the phone was in the dream and being used?
