Driven by the strength and bravery of those they help, Texas Hunt for the Cure enriches the lives of children diagnosed with severe and life-threatening conditions with unique outdoor activities and trips. Their hunting and fishing experiences make it possible for these young people to enjoy a trip of a lifetime, mentoring them and their family in the process. That’s why they’re coordinating a Mountain Man Competition in Italy, Texas, that you’re going to want to get in on.

Texas Hunt for the Cure got its beginnings in 2012 when Stacy Stanberry took a young family friend out on his last hunt. Diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma cancer, the young man lost his life to the disease just three weeks later. Through the experience and processing his grief, Stanberry was inspired to develop the organization which has grown to provide the many outdoor opportunities it has for similar youth.

“After seeing the change it made in this young man and the difference it made in not only his life, but mine as well, I talked to a few family members and close friends about trying to help other children that are facing these life threatening illnesses,” Stanberry told willspointchronicle.com. Together, they launched the opportunity to give hunting, fishing, and camping experiences which are second-to-none to children undergoing the diagnosis and treatment of life-changing, sometimes fatal, diseases and conditions. In the process, they teach the youth hunting skills and ethics, fishing techniques and tricks, firearm safety, and great camping hacks, while allowing them time to relax and just be a kid.

Texas Hunt for the Cure is able to do its great work through fundraising initiatives, the generosity of its sponsors, and its valued group of volunteers. An annual golf tournament helps support their mission, as well as a dove hunt, and a new event they’re launching in September called the Mountain Man Competition. It’s scheduled for September 14 at Whiterock Trophy Ranch in Italy, Texas. This one-of-a-kind event features team competition (up to five people) and individual competition in such outdoor sports as longbow, double axe throwing, clay shooting, firearms targeting, and so much more! Not only that, but a Friday night fish fry and a Saturday barbecue cookoff are taking place, with prizes totaling $3,000 in all categories for the latter. Share in some tasty Texas BBQ including jackpot beans, chicken, ribs, and brisket! If that wasn’t enough, a good old-fashioned cornhole tournament will also be taking place, featuring two divisions (social beginners and a “B” division) for up to $1,000 in total prizes!

Those interested in learning more can visit the Texas Hunt for the Cure Facebook post, or call Shane Webster at (214) 673-7261. Cornhole competition registration is happening through the East Texas Cornhole League by calling (903) 203-7829, and sponsorships for the Mountain Man Competition are still available at various levels. With live bands, raffles, a concession, and free lunch for all participants, this is a win-win event for guests as well as for the kids that benefit.
