If a full-on, leave-me-alone, day at the beach is what you’re looking for, visit Boca Chica State Park, in Brownsville (approx. 30 minutes away by vehicle). Please note, regardless of being a state park, your day alone at the beach will be exactly that – a day alone, without the pleasure of porta-potties even.

That aside, the area is nicely set up for camping, fishing, and swimming, so please plan ahead for any bring-along amenities you’ll require. The reason this beach makes this list is its solitude, clear water, and beach access by vehicle or four-wheeler.

Another interesting pastime for this locale is also the use of metal detectors in search of buried treasure from the days of pirate yore. And if sanctuary is your style, then how about a day of bird-watching at the World Birding Center at the mouth of the Rio Grande, not to mention the exceptional paddling opportunities.
