Now the general store serves as the central location for entertainment in Castell. Visitors can buy basic groceries and necessities for an overnight stay, rent tubes and kayaks for river play, and enjoy the camaraderie of locals always willing to share a story. The general store also serves its own barbecue smoked up fresh right in front of the store on most Saturdays. The shop occasionally serves burgers and steaks and has live music as well. Although Duke is no longer around to provide live entertainment, Randy Leifeste, owner of the general store, had him stuffed so that guests may still take photos with the infamous bird. Check the Castell General Store Facebook group page for the latest info and entertainment.

To really immerse yourself into the calm and culture of the village, plan an overnight stay. Accommodation choices range from camping to cabins to a three-bedroom cottage.

The Castell Cottage is located high on the banks of the Llano and exudes quiet country charm while still offering modern amenities. Fully furnished and tastefully decorated, this home is perfect for families or friends looking to get away from it all.

For those looking for a more rustic experience, check out Merlin’s Cabin. Built in the ’40s or ’50s as a fishing hangout, this 400-square-foot funky efficiency can be home base for a weekend of lounging in Castell.

Offering meal deals and massages, but also equipped with its own backyard grill under shady oaks, Merlin’s is just a short walk to the Llano River. With no television or telephone, the cabin and outside deck provide the perfect place to chill and get off the grid for awhile.

And for the traditionalists that believe true camping can only be done by tent, Riversounds campground provides quiet and private campsites on the banks of the Llano. The campground is situated within easy access of downtown Castell and has a small beach and children’s wading area. Fresh well water is offered for free, but leave Fido at home as pets are not allowed.
