Having shopped this “Great Street in Texas” and truly satisfied your thirst and appetite, a tour of the colorful art galleries and public art installations on the Hill Country Mile is also in order. The arts, combined with the charm of Boerne, make touring the area a true joy. The town’s public art program features a permanent collection which has recently seen the addition of two new sculptures from last year’s Art al Fresco exhibition. This year’s display, similar to prior exhibits, consists of an outdoor composition of large-scale public art located throughout historic downtown Boerne. The pieces are temporarily highlighted along the Hill Country Mile as well as the urban trail system. The discovery of each new piece along this exhibit is a walkable adventure for residents as well as visitors. In addition, voters can choose the recipient of the “Boerne’s Choice” award. The artist voted “Boerne’s Choice” will be recognized by the City at the close of the competition. Each of the “Art al Fresco” sculptures are available for sale and Boerne has the option to purchase at least one of them for its permanent collection. The competition is sponsored by the City, and the program stems from years of collaboration between the local arts community and the City of Boerne. The permanent additions help to continue Boerne’s five-year plan to grow its public art collection for the enjoyment of locals and visitors alike, beautifying their part of the Texas Hill Country through the use of visual form.
