In an interesting turn of events—one which you would almost always read about in a book or see in a movie, but never really experience in real life—a time capsule was discovered at Wunsche Brothers Cafe and Saloon in Old Town Spring. The 117-year-old building was undergoing some renovations when the container was discovered, revealing some unique Texas history.

In an interview on June 28, 2019, managing partner Tina Goodson told acb13.com, “This is like a little piece of history that we’re getting to open up today. I can’t wait to see what’s inside.” The time capsule dated back to 1983. While that doesn’t seem so long ago to a lot of us, nonetheless 36 years is nothing to sneeze at, and the unique items which were found inside gave insight as to what the cafe and saloon operation would have been at that time.

In 1983, George Mitchell, a Woodlands developer, and his family had ownership of the Wunsche Brothers Café and Saloon. Items which were discovered in the time capsule upon opening included building blueprints, some personal notes, and a handwritten menu. There were also pictures and newspapers from the same time period. Marybeth Vincent, a former employee, jokingly told abc13.com, “I hope there wasn’t a spirit here that wasn’t ready to be released. If so, welcome!”

Following a fire in 2015, the beloved landmark business in Old Town Spring was forced to close. There have since been extensive renovations to the café and saloon, and an announcement came in April that the entity would reopen in the fall of 2019. It was designated a historical landmark in 1984, having first opened in 1902. After the fire, the property was placed on the market until the new owners, Casey and Nancy Kosh (owners of the Woodland’s Amerigo’s Grille) couldn’t pass it up. A grand re-opening event is expected to be announced soon.
