Cruisin’ Canyon Lake Getaway Weekend

Every now and then, we all need to get away and have a little fun (even during the school year). What place better to place to do just that than Canyon Lake, Texas? You simply can’t go  wrong! The Canyon Lake Pilot Club, in conjunction with the Canyon Lake Community Resource Center and the Tye Preston Memorial Library, have an amazing weekend planned for you October 7-9, 2016.

The Cruisin’ Canyon Lake Getaway Weekend fundraising event will deliver a little bit of Hill Country paradise full of live music, nature, the arts, tasty food, delicious wine, and even a little exercise over Columbus Day weekend. The event will be held near the Canyon Lake Gorge and Dam area and The Canyon Lake Pilot Club will donate proceeds to The Canyon Lake Community Resource and Recreation Center and Friends of the Tye Preston Memorial Library.

1 – 5 p.m. Check in at the dam at Overlook Park, 601 Coe Rd. Here you will receive your goodie bag and badge. Be sure to take in the view!

1:30 – 2:30 p.m. & 2:45 – 3:45 p.m. Paddle boarding with Zack from Canyon Lake Adventures at Comal Park.

3 – 5:30 p.m. Get Back to Your Roots with a course in genealogy at the library. The first hour involves learning about the basics of genealogy and the second hour you will learn how to create Veteran’s Memorial page on the Fold3 website. The site provides access to U.S. military records, stories, and pictures of the men and women who have served our country from as far back as the Revolution.

5 – 6:30 p.m. Join in on the Welcome Reception at the Rec Center with a glass of wine and some hors d’oeuvres from Ruth Stone Catering.

5:30 – 9 p.m. Take an amazing 3-hour cruise of Canyon Lake while watching the sunset. Meet the yacht at 280 Marina Dr.

7:30  – 9 p.m. Do a little boot scootin’ at the Rec Center. Who doesn’t love line dancing? Or, head over to the Libray for a free movie and popcorn.

8:30 – 11:30 a.m. Take a 3-hour guided walking tour of the Canyon Lake Gorge to learn about the geology, paleontology, and biology of the Texas Hill Country. FYI – this walk can be physically demanding. Arrive at 16029 S. Access Rd. between FM 306 and FM 2673.

9 – 10 a.m. Get your groove on at the Rec Center with a little Zumba.

9 – 10 a.m. & 10:15 – 11:15 a.m. Learn the basics of kayaking from Zach of Canyon Lake Adventures before taking your newfound skills to the waters of Canyon Lake at Comal Park.

9:30 a.m – 11:30 a.m. & 2:30 – 4:30 p.m. Show up for Silk Scarf Painting and Betty will guide you through the production of your own silk scarf design at the Library.

9:45 – 11:15 a.m. A delightful bite of a warm, fresh Kolache makes anyone’s mouth water. How about taking at stab a baking your own Lemon Curd Kolache with Becky Carney from 7 Grams at the library?

10 – 11:30 a.m. & 2:30 – 4 p.m. Why pay for high-priced greeting cards when you can learn to make one at the Creative Card-Making class with Cindy at the library?

10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. & 3 – 4:30 p.m. Create your own clay pot with clay artist Marilyn Good of Good Works Clay at the Rec Center. Marilyn will fire and can ship it to you if you prefer.

11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Tee off and get that hole in one you’ve been dreaming of all year at the Lakeside Golf Club, 405 Watts Ln.

12 – 1:30 p.m. Head out to the Canyon Lake Marina for a Small Party Boat Lunch Cruise where a box lunch will be provided while you take in fantastic scenery of Canyon Lake.

12 – 2 p.m. Enjoy a walk along the beautiful Guadalupe River while on a guided tour to discover the native plants of the Texas Hill Country. The tour begins at the CRRC Rec Center Pavilion. A box lunch will be provided.

12:15 – 2 p.m. Eat an amazingly delicious lunch at the library with a side of scones and a presentation by New Braunfels’ caterer Ruth Stone of Tea & Savories.

2:30 – 4 p.m. Fly fishing is a pastime out on the Guadalupe River. Learn how to design and create your own flies as The Guadalupe River Chapter of Trout Unlimited demonstrates fly tying at the library.

4-5 p.m. Break time! And after participating in all these amazing activities, you deserve one. Enjoy a soda and a popcorn snack at the Rec Center Cool Café while swapping adventure stories.

6-8 p.m. Gather ’round at Canyon Cigar Company for a Smoker Social and a free cigar. Snacks and soda will be provided, but you are welcome to BYO drink of choice.

7-11 p.m. Let loose and dance the night away at the Grateful Geezers Dance and Concert held at the Rec Center. Beer and wine will be available for sale.

10-11 a.m. Take a Walk With the Dinosaurs at the Heritage Museum of Texas Hill Country at 4831 FM 2673. Special displays will be made available for you that aren’t available for public viewing.

11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Drive over to 1741 Herbelin Rd., New Braunfels, Texas for the Dry Comal Creek Winery Tour & Tasting. You won’t want to miss this Texas Hill Country wine tasting!

The Canyon Lake Pilot Club is a service organization whose mission is “Protect Your Brain for Life”.  To help accomplish this mission, we educate the community on brain injury prevention, rehabilitation, coping, and caregiving programs. We also financially support these programs:

  • Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) camps
  • Bicycle rodeos at local elementary schools
  • Communities in Schools’ programs
  • Oak Tree Assisted Living senior care support

The Canyon Lake Community Resource and Recreation Center is a local nonprofit organization whose mission is to serve the residents of Canyon Lake by providing vital social service resources, as well as life-enriching recreational and educational opportunities.

Friends of the Tye Preston Memorial Library is a library built by the community for the community that serves all ages in the Canyon Lake community. The services that it provides include:

  • Public programming that ranges from lectures to concerts
  • A Summer Reading Program for all ages
  • Community meeting rooms

On the grounds of the library are a nature trail, butterfly garden, and an observatory.
