Every year, Austin’s kite festival, now officially called ABC Kite Fest, takes over Zilker Park. Families flock to the green grounds overlooking downtown to fly kites of all sizes. So many residents attend that it’s impossible to walk through the park without having to dodge falling kites or running kite owners who want to get their colorful kites into the sky.

This year, the festival had to be postponed at the last minute due to weather. Though many families were ready to get to the park and start flying, the City of Austin told the fest that the constant rain from the day and night before made Zilker into a muddy mess. And after the hard lesson the city learned from 2009’s ACL Fest, thousands of people walking on muddy Zilker grounds results in a ruined park.

ABC Kite Fest wrote on their website, “While we are disappointed with the postponement, we agree with the City’s decision and want everyone attending the festival to have the experience they deserve and to protect Zilker Park from any potential damage.”

The new date for the ABC Kite Festival will be Sunday, March 12th. Luckily, KXAN says their meteorologists predict that the weather will be warmer, windier, and drier!
