Many folks are aware of Enchanted Rock, and campers from all over the state and beyond covet the chance to spend the night under the stars in this beautiful, sacred place. However, not everyone knows that this area is also ripe for rock excavation. The area’s geological make-up offers rock collectors a number of special finds, including amethyst, garnet, topaz, quartz, and even gold. There’s also a particular quartz called “Llanite,” which can only be found in Llano County. As the temperatures dip, fall is the perfect time to do some digging and see if you can unearth something special! You’re sure to come away with a souvenir of memories that will surely last a lifetime. If you’d like an easier path to precious stones, check out Enchanted Rocks and Jewelry on Berry Street, where they can also tell you more about the rocks in the area.

The earth’s rise into what is known as the Llano Uplift is what creates this rich geologic environment. The Llano County Historic Museum is a fun spot to learn more about geology as well as explore Llano’s rich, captivating history. Stepping into this building is a treat all its own, considering it once housed the Bruhl Drugstore, and the original soda fountain and leather stools are still intact. It’s a true blast from the past!

As you head further into downtown Llano, check out the unique charm of historic Main Street and the Lantex Theater. Still in operation, this vintage theater lets you step back in time to the golden age of cinema and enjoy the big screen in the original seats and decor. As the holidays approach, look for seasonal classics like It’s a Wonderful Life.
