Filmed during The Cowboy Rides Away tour, the video below of George Strait singing “A Showman’s Life” with Faith Hill has been viewed more than 2.5 million times. However, is it any wonder? When the King of Country Music hand-picks the artists he wants to share the stage and the microphone with for his final official tour, you know their duets are going to be nothing short of perfection. The song lends itself nicely to their vocal pairing, but the lyrics are truly what give the listener chills.
Jesse Winchester wrote the ballad that speaks to the sadness a stage performer can experience as a result of fame. Gary Allan recorded the song on his 2003 album entitled “See If I Care,” with Willie Nelson singing harmony. Nelson’s role in Allan’s recording is the harmony that Faith Hill sings in the video below with George Strait. “They told me all about the pretty girls, and the wine and the money and the good times. There’s no mention of all the wear and tear, on an old honky tonker’s heart. Well, I might have known it, but nobody told me about this part…” some of the lyrics read. The video for the song featured below was filmed during the final show of Strait’s tour on June 7, 2014. 104,000 fans attended the show at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, and millions more were treated to the full TV special when CMT aired the concert.
