Based on statistics from The FBI’s Uniform Crime Reports (whose most recent report contains data from 2013), violent crime rates vary widely across Texas. Although many people consider violent crime a problem only for Texas’ largest cities, these statistics show that is not necessarily the case. The FBI ranks statistics based on incidents per 100,000 residents, with reports of murder, manslaughter, rape, robbery, theft, and aggravated assault being calculated. Here are the top five most dangerous places in Texas, based on the FBI report:

1. Odessa

Be aware of your surroundings in Odessa! The city comes in at number one on the list of dangerous cities in Texas, with 806.4 violent crime incidents per 100,000 residents. Odessa has the lowest murder rate of the top five cities, but still takes the top spot with a relatively large number of larceny-theft and aggravated assault cases.

2. Lubbock

It’s best to keep your property under lock and key in Lubbock, with the city’s highest numbers falling under the robbery and theft categories. Lubbock’s murder rate is relatively low, however, and the aggravated assault rate is on par with other cities in the top five.

3. Houston

The most populated city in the top five is Houston, which comes in third overall in violent crime. Houston’s aggravated assault rate is astronomically higher than any other city in the top five, at 2896.8 out of 100,000. Meanwhile, Houston has the lowest rate of reported rapes in the top five.

4. Texarkana
