The first thing people notice about Mason is the town square. Mason’s town square is considered to be one of the five most beautiful squares in Texas. Mason residents and visitors refer to mason as the Gem of the Hill Country because of their beautiful town square.
The area has housed many famous individuals over the years. Most of these individuals were statesmen, authors, artists, and craftsmen, two men in particular were Gene Zesch and Bill Worrell. Recently, vineyards have been growing in Mason County.
Texas Hill Country is famous for housing some of the best wines around. Mason follows this tradition by housing the award winning wines of Sandstone Cellars Winery.
It’s not everyday that you can see millions of bats. There are several areas across Texas Hill Country where the infamous bat colonies can be seen emerging at dusk. From 6:00-8:00 PM (May through October) the popular Texas creature can be seen emerging from the James River Bat Preserve. Around four million female bats live inside this Preserve.
Topaz is Texas’ state gemstone. Topaz is usually found on the base of streams and ravines. The only area Topaz can be found is in Mason County. We encourage tourists to head out for an adventurous day Topaz Hunting at Seaquist ranch or Lindsay Ranch.
Head over to West Texas’ longest running theater, The Odeon Theater, which was built in 1928 and premiered the movie “Old Yeller” in 1957.
