Texas native and legendary Port Arthur Blues musician Janis Joplin will be honored at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio August 6-8. The Janis Joplin Fan Weekend marks the 50th anniversary of the release of Joplin’s final album, Pearl.
At the exhibit Joplin’s fans can view such items as her handwritten lyrics, clothing, and a collection of rare photographs by Barry Feinstein. As the photographer, filmmaker, and art director responsible for creating some of the most iconic and enduring pop culture imagery of the mid-20th century, Feinstein created artwork for over 500 albums including “Pearl.”

Fans can also view Janis Joplin footage from the Rock Hall’s vault, including highlights from her 1995 Induction. Special screenings will feature the 2009 Annual Music Masters tribute concert. Fans of Joplin’s can also attend a Pearl album spotlight lecture.
Joplin’s iconic music and lyrics will be heard inside the Museum all weekend. The music will also play on the Rock Hall’s Rock Boxes, located downtown along East 9th Street. Rock Hall’s Long Live Rock art installation will honor Janis Joplin, providing fans with a perfect photo opportunity to remember her life, her music, and her legacy.
The Museum will also host two virtual events honoring Janis Joplin’s legacy. The first event takes place on August 6, featuring Melissa Etheridge, who inducted Joplin in 1995. Etheridge’s induction speech will premiere on The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Vault podcast on iHeart Radio prior to the event.

On August 25th at 7 p.m., Holly George-Warren joins Rock Hall to discuss her book, “Janis: Her Life and Music.”
Fans wishing to commemorate the trip can purchase new Joplin-themed merchandise debuting in the Rock Hall store. An opportunity to relive the experience will be September 7th at Rockhall.com, where the Museum will launch the Janis Joplin Legends of Rock Virtual Exhibit.

Janis Lyn Joplin was born Jan. 19 in 1943, and she died of a heroin overdose Oct. 4, 1970, when she was only 27 years old. During her brief career, the popular singer and songwriter won fans everywhere with her rock, soul and blues music, powerful vocals, and electric stage presence.
The Museum of the Gulf Coast in Joplin’s hometown of Port Arthur is a great starting place for Joplin’s fans to view a large collection of her memorabilia and learn more about her history. This museum hosts three Popular Culture galleries featuring notable personalities of the Gulf Coast.
The Music Hall of Fame highlights more than 80 music legends representing a wide variety of genres. The Sports Legends Gallery highlights more than 78 athletes representing several disciplines, and The Notable People Gallery highlights 40 individuals who have achieved national and/or international recognition in various professional endeavors such as entertainment, politics, science and education.
