Over the past few days alone, folks in Texas have heard varying directions and accounts with respect to COVID-19 and the coronavirus pandemic. If, like many, you’re in the Texas Hill Country and wondering where you can look for online assistance, current updates, news, and tips with respect to this epidemic, there are a few community assistance groups that can help.

One such example is a Facebook group based in Fredericksburg and listed as Covid-19 Community Assist – Fredericksburg, TX. Although not vetted by the city as a formal site from which to obtain local and state direction, this group, similar to others which have recently formed, shares details on useful links, recipes, details on community donations, and social distancing aids.

Also on Facebook, and established as recently as March 14, 2020, Covid-19 Community Assist – Austin, TX is a public group designed to similarly support those in the area of the state capital. Here in the Texas Hill Country, many are located fairly close together, but supporting one another at a time when social distancing and self-isolation have become key phrases has grown in popularity online. Fear can swell and neighbors are often needed to reach out with even a simple hello. Sometimes such groups can ease anxieties, share valuable details on how best to help, and provide links to services and contact information for local industry.

In more official terms, cities and towns across the Hill Country have been working to coordinate official online information that is reliable and direct. The City of Boerne, as an example, has been posting local alerts on its social media, in efforts to inform everyone about public health declarations, business closures, and essential services. Their mayor has actively taken steps to inform his citizens of city services that are operational, information pertaining to confirmed COVID-19 cases in their area, and what steps are to be taken by the public in the days ahead.

To say that COVID-19 and the coronavirus has caught the world, as we know it, on its heels, is an understatement. However, to think that in this age of online access to information and social media, there isn’t assistance out there akin to helping your neighbor as in olden days would be shortsighted. The value is in ensuring you’ve done your due diligence, sorting out what pieces of information are of value to you and your family, and how best to make use of it. Stay safe and healthy Hill Country readers and beyond. We wish you all good mental and physical health in the weeks and months ahead.
