“There are basically two types of drivers: those who get worked up about people driving slowly in the left lane, and those who do it all the time and have no idea they’re upsetting everyone else,” explains Vox writer Joseph Stromberg. He confesses that he used to be one of the carefree left lane highway drivers who somehow didn’t observe cars passing around him angrily.

So what made him take notice? While on a road trip, Stromberg was pulled over for using the left lane as a regular traveling lane instead of a passing lane.

As he explains in his article and video, many states have laws to remind drivers to use the left lane for passing only. Stromberg then goes on to say why this is actually a really good idea, and if more people knew why this notion makes so much sense, perhaps it would work out more smoothly on the road for us all.

The video uses simple animation to detail why these “two types of driver” should merge into one. When everyone’s safety, well-being and sanity is involved, even those who already know all the rules of the road might need a little reminder about this one.

How do you react when you get caught behind a slow driver in the left lane? Do you keep your cool, or do you let a few choice words escape your lips? Knowing why you shouldn’t drive slowly in the left lane is an important part of every driver’s education, but there are a few other bits of knowledge that every driver should possess. For example, do you know what to do if you’re driving when a hailstorm suddenly breaks out? Do you know what you should never do with an underpass during a storm?
