David Lawhorn and Gabriele Meissner McCormick grew up in big cities most of their lives. They stumbled upon the small, peaceful community of Welfare in 1992 and fell in love. It was the perfect place for them to relax and garden in a small town community, but still have the option to commute to bigger cities. The town comprised of an old general store and post office, several barns, and several left over buildings and areas. Restoration of the Welfare Cafe’ began in 1998, where Gabriele decided to follow her passion of cooking.
