No one likes to be alone on their birthday, so when Austinite Lauren Hamilton realized that her family would be out of town for a wedding and her friends couldn’t make it out, she had to adjust her plans. Taking a risk, she posted a thread on Reddit, the web content aggregate and discussion-based website, hoping that locals Redditors would embrace the idea of a meet-up to celebrate her 24th birthday at Warehouse Billiards on Ben White.

Since people can be cruel, especially on the internet, Hamilton was apprehensive. But people on the Austin subreddit responded kindly and enthusiastically. “For me it’s a bigger picture, it shows there are a lot of good people here,” Hamilton told KVUE. “I hope people come out not just for me, but to get that sweet Austin friendly feel.”

When Warehouse Billiards caught wind of her idea, they provided a cake and punch and advertised the party on their Instagram. When the weekend rolled around, Hamilton posted a reminder saying, “I’ll have big balloons that say ’24’ so you can find me!”

Though it doesn’t seem like anyone posted photos after the event, it sounds like it went well, giving Hamilton a fun and unique birthday celebration. “It was nice to see so many interesting people make it out…Oh and thanks for the goodie bag!” one Redditor wrote.
