Celebrating their 25th year working in the area, the North Collin County Habitat for Humanity will build a new, one-of-a-kind community in east McKinney (northeast of Dallas.) This community will be made up of 35 shipping container units that can be transformed into nice homes fit for families.

“They said, how can we maximize this piece of property to the highest and best use to serve the most families?” President Celeste Haiduk-Cox told WFAA about his meeting with Habitat for Humanity planners. “The cool thing is they can be put together very quickly,” he added, noting that a large amount of shipping containers are brought to the U.S. consistently.

Habitat for Humanity has ventured into the storage container home territory before with houses in places like Cincinnati. In a report by Local 12, the news takes viewers inside of one of the shipping containers and shows how warm and cozy it can become inside. “It feels surprisingly spacious,” the reporter said. In order to get the new North Collin County Habitats up and running, the community will need volunteers. Click here to see how you can get involved.
