Have you ever been to a charreada? Have you heard of one? If pageantry and skill, coupled with costumes and horses, sound like a fun time, then buy up some of the remaining tickets for the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo Charreada on Sunday, February 28th at 2 p.m. in the Freeman Coliseum. Proudly brought to the rodeo by the hardworking Horse Show Committee, this is truly a fun affair.
Deeply rooted in Western and Mexican culture, this style of showmanship traces back to the 16th century, where the first charreadas were held between rival haciendas as ranch work competitions. Today, it is the official sport of Mexico (sorry, soccer) and enjoyed across the country, as well as the world. Often, multiple generations within the same family compete in the tradition of charreada, sometimes up to five generations deep.

Participants are judged on a variety of categories, including dressage, competitive roping, and horsemanship. In San Antonio, charros and their female counterparts, the Escaramuzas, offer a show through the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo; Charreada San Antonio will be held as an official event for the second year in a row. Here, two teams will perform Cala de Caballo (Test of the Horse), Jineteo de Toro (Bullriding), and Paso de la Muerte (Pass of Death), among other breath-taking feats.
Keep in the loop for updates and information via social media, and experience an authentic part of heritage many Texans hold dear. Unlike the majority of regular San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo events which are not open to the public in 2021, Charreada San Antonio tickets are available for anyone to come see the show. Seating is reserved; tickets are $20. VIP Seating is also available for $50, and includes two drink vouchers for day of performance. Social distancing seating is being implemented. Let’s Charreada!
